Magnesium Oxide

Industrial Grade ยท Light & Heavy Grade โ€” Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is Magnesium Oxide?

Magnesium Oxide (MgO), commonly known as Magnesia, is an inorganic compound produced by the calcination of magnesium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide. It is a white, fine crystalline powder with one of the highest melting points of all oxides (2852ยฐC), making it an outstanding refractory material. It is available in two main commercial forms: Light Magnesium Oxide (low bulk density, high surface area, high reactivity) and Heavy Magnesium Oxide (high bulk density, lower reactivity, better suited for refractories).

Polychem Industries supplies Magnesium Oxide to refractory manufacturers, rubber compounders, construction chemical producers, and animal feed formulators across India and internationally. Its combination of high melting point, alkalinity, and reactivity makes it one of the most versatile metal oxides in industrial use.

Applications & Uses

๐Ÿ”ฅ

Refractories

One of the most important refractory materials globally. Heavy Magnesium Oxide (dead-burned magnesia) is used in the manufacture of refractory bricks, linings, and castables for steelmaking furnaces, cement kilns, non-ferrous metal furnaces, and other high-temperature industrial equipment.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Construction & Building Materials

Used in the production of Sorel cement (magnesium oxychloride cement), which is exceptionally hard and resistant to abrasion. Also used in fire-resistant boards, dry wall compounds, and construction chemical additives.

๐Ÿ„

Animal Feed

Used as a magnesium supplement in ruminant animal feed to prevent grass tetany (hypomagnesaemia) in cattle and sheep. Provides a highly bioavailable source of magnesium for livestock.

๐ŸŽ๏ธ

Rubber Industry

Used as an activator and acid scavenger in rubber compounding, particularly in chloroprene and halogenated rubber formulations. Neutralises HCl generated during rubber vulcanisation.

๐Ÿ’ง

Water & Waste Treatment

Used to neutralise acidic effluents and adjust pH in wastewater treatment. Its relatively slow reaction rate compared to lime gives more controlled pH adjustment in industrial effluent treatment.

๐Ÿงช

Chemical & Pharmaceutical

Used as an antacid and laxative in pharmaceutical applications. Also used as a raw material for the production of other magnesium compounds and as a catalyst in certain chemical reactions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Light and Heavy Magnesium Oxide?
Light Magnesium Oxide (LMO) is produced by calcination at lower temperatures and has a low bulk density (0.1โ€“0.3 g/cm3), high surface area, and high reactivity. It is preferred for rubber, animal feed, and chemical applications. Heavy Magnesium Oxide (HMO or Dead-burned Magnesia) is calcined at very high temperatures (1400-1800ยฐC) and has a high bulk density (0.5โ€“0.8 g/cm3) and very low reactivity. It is preferred for refractory applications where resistance to sintering and high-temperature stability are critical.
What is the purity of Magnesium Oxide and why does it vary?
Magnesium Oxide purity (expressed as MgO%) varies depending on the source material and calcination process. Industrial grades typically range from 90โ€“98% MgO. The main impurities are CaO, SiO2, and Fe2O3. Higher purity grades are produced from high-purity magnesite or seawater-derived magnesium hydroxide. The required purity depends on the application โ€” refractory grades may accept 90-93% while pharmaceutical grades require 96-99%.
Is Magnesium Oxide safe for use in animal feed?
Yes โ€” Magnesium Oxide is widely used as an approved magnesium supplement in ruminant animal feed. It is particularly important for preventing grass tetany in cattle and sheep grazing on lush grass. It is included in the European Union and global lists of approved feed additives for livestock. Feed-grade MgO should meet specific purity and particle size specifications.
Do you export Magnesium Oxide outside India?
Yes. We export to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and South Africa with full export documentation. Contact us for export pricing and lead times.
