Methyl Methacrylate

Industrial Grade Monomer (MMA) — Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is Methyl Methacrylate?

Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) is a clear, colourless, volatile liquid monomer with a characteristic sharp, fruity odour and the chemical formula CH2=C(CH3)COOCH3. It is the foundational building block for Poly(methyl methacrylate) — PMMA — commonly known by trade names such as acrylic glass or Plexiglas. As a highly reactive vinyl monomer, MMA readily undergoes free-radical polymerisation to form transparent, durable acrylic polymers widely used across multiple industries.

Polychem Industries supplies Methyl Methacrylate to acrylic sheet manufacturers, paint and coating producers, adhesive formulators, and dental material companies across India and internationally. Its versatility as a monomer for producing optically clear, weather-resistant polymers makes it one of the most important specialty monomers in commercial use, supplied with inhibitor for safe storage and transport.

Safety & Handling Notice

Methyl Methacrylate is a highly flammable, volatile monomer with a strong, penetrating odour. It is a skin and respiratory irritant and can undergo rapid exothermic polymerisation if exposed to heat or contaminants. Handle with full PPE including gloves, goggles, and adequate ventilation. Store with inhibitor (MEHQ) and away from heat, sparks, and oxidising agents.

Applications & Uses

🪟

Acrylic Sheets & PMMA Resin

The most significant application. MMA is polymerised to produce PMMA (acrylic glass), used in transparent sheets, glazing, signage, lighting fixtures, and a wide range of optically clear plastic products valued for their clarity and weather resistance.

🎨

Paints & Coatings

Used as a monomer in the production of acrylic resins for paints, automotive coatings, and industrial coatings, providing excellent gloss retention, weather resistance, and colour stability in the finished coating.

🦷

Dental & Medical Materials

Used in the production of dental acrylic resins for dentures, dental fillings, and orthodontic appliances, as well as in certain medical device applications including bone cement formulations used in orthopaedic surgery.

🧴

Adhesives & Sealants

Used as a monomer in the production of acrylic adhesives, including structural adhesives and pressure-sensitive adhesive formulations valued for their strong bonding and durability characteristics.

💅

Nail & Cosmetic Applications

Used in the formulation of certain nail enhancement products and cosmetic applications where its polymerisation properties create durable, glossy finishes.

🏭

Industrial & Specialty Polymers

Used as a comonomer in various specialty acrylic copolymer formulations for textile finishing, leather coating, and other industrial applications requiring specific polymer properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PMMA and how is it related to MMA?
PMMA (Poly methyl methacrylate), commonly known by trade names like acrylic glass or Plexiglas, is the polymer formed when MMA monomer molecules link together through free-radical polymerisation. PMMA is valued for its exceptional optical clarity (comparable to glass), light weight, impact resistance, and weatherability, making MMA one of the most important monomers in the plastics industry.
Why is MMA supplied with an inhibitor?
MMA is a highly reactive monomer that can undergo spontaneous, exothermic polymerisation if exposed to heat, light, or peroxide contamination. To prevent this during storage and transport, it is supplied with MEHQ (monomethyl ether hydroquinone) inhibitor, which requires the presence of dissolved oxygen to remain effective — containers should not be fully sealed without oxygen headspace for extended storage.
What precautions are needed when handling Methyl Methacrylate?
MMA is flammable and has a strong, penetrating odour that can cause respiratory and eye irritation even at low concentrations. Handling should include adequate ventilation, appropriate PPE (gloves, goggles, and respiratory protection where vapour exposure is likely), and storage away from heat sources, open flames, and oxidising agents.
Do you export Methyl Methacrylate outside India?
Yes. We export to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and South Africa with full export documentation. As a flammable liquid, all applicable dangerous goods regulations are followed during transport. Contact us for export pricing.
