Potassium Nitrate

Industrial Grade · Agricultural Grade — Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is Potassium Nitrate?

Potassium Nitrate (KNO₃), commonly known as Saltpetre or Nitre, is a naturally occurring mineral and chemical compound that is an important source of both potassium and nitrogen — two essential plant macronutrients. It appears as a white crystalline powder and is highly soluble in water. It is a mild oxidising agent that finds application across agriculture, food preservation, glass manufacturing, and industrial heat treatment.

Polychem Industries supplies Potassium Nitrate in industrial grade and agricultural grade to fertiliser manufacturers, glass producers, food processors, and industrial users across India and internationally. Its dual role as both a potassium and nitrogen source makes it particularly valued in specialty fertiliser formulations and hydroponics.

Oxidiser Safety Notice

Potassium Nitrate is an oxidising agent and should be stored away from combustible materials, flammable substances, and organic materials. It can accelerate fires if it comes into contact with combustibles. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area in sealed containers. Handle with appropriate PPE and follow all applicable fire safety regulations.

Applications & Uses

🌿

Specialty Fertilisers

An excellent source of both potassium (K) and nitrate nitrogen (N) for plants. Widely used in high-value crop fertigation, foliar sprays, and hydroponics where a chloride-free, fully water-soluble potassium and nitrogen source is needed.

🪟

Glass Manufacturing

Used as a refining agent and oxidiser in glass production. Helps remove bubbles and impurities from molten glass, and is used in the production of specialty glass including TV screens and optical glass.

🔥

Heat Treatment Salts

Used in molten salt baths for the heat treatment of metals including quenching, tempering, and annealing processes. Potassium Nitrate salt baths are operated at temperatures of 150–550°C.

🥩

Food Preservation

Food Grade KNO₃ (E252) is used as a curing agent in processed meats such as ham, bacon, and salami. It inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria including Clostridium botulinum and contributes to the characteristic colour and flavour of cured meats.

🌱

Hydroponics & Fertigation

A preferred potassium-nitrogen source in hydroponic nutrient solutions and fertigation systems due to its complete water solubility, lack of chloride, and balanced N:K ratio that suits most crop requirements.

🧪

Chemical Synthesis

Used as an oxidising agent and potassium source in chemical manufacturing, in the production of other potassium compounds, and as a laboratory reagent for analytical and synthetic chemistry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What nutrients does Potassium Nitrate provide for plants?
Potassium Nitrate provides two essential macronutrients: Potassium (K) at approximately 38.7% K (46.6% K₂O) and Nitrate Nitrogen (NO₃-N) at approximately 13.8%. The nitrate form of nitrogen is immediately available for plant uptake and does not require conversion by soil microbes, making it ideal for fertigation and hydroponics where fast crop response is required.
Why is Potassium Nitrate preferred over Muriate of Potash (KCl) for certain crops?
Potassium Nitrate is chloride-free and provides nitrate nitrogen alongside potassium. It is preferred for chloride-sensitive crops (such as tobacco, potatoes, tomatoes, and citrus) where chloride can reduce quality. It is also preferred in fertigation and hydroponics as it is fully water-soluble and provides both K and N in a single product.
What temperature range is Potassium Nitrate used for in heat treatment?
Potassium Nitrate salt baths (often mixed with Sodium Nitrite as a eutectic mixture) are used for metal heat treatment in the temperature range of approximately 150–550°C. At these temperatures the molten salt provides excellent heat transfer, uniform temperature distribution, and controlled atmosphere for quenching, tempering, and austempering of steel components.
Do you export Potassium Nitrate outside India?
Yes. We export to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and South Africa with full export documentation. As an oxidising material, all applicable dangerous goods regulations are complied with during transport. Contact us for export pricing and lead times.
