Sodium Acetate

Food Grade · Industrial Grade — Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is Sodium Acetate?

Sodium Acetate is the sodium salt of acetic acid, available in both anhydrous and trihydrate crystalline forms. It is a white, mildly alkaline solid widely used as a food preservative and flavouring agent, a buffering agent across numerous applications, and as a functional additive in textile processing and construction materials. Its ability to form a stable buffer system with acetic acid makes it particularly valuable in applications requiring precise pH control.

Polychem Industries supplies Sodium Acetate in food grade and industrial grade to food manufacturers, textile dyeing companies, concrete admixture producers, and various industrial chemical formulators across India and internationally. Its versatility as both a food ingredient and an industrial buffering and processing aid makes it one of the most widely used acetate salts in commercial use.

Applications & Uses

๐Ÿฅซ

Food Preservation & Flavouring

Used as a preservative and flavouring agent in various food products, particularly in snack foods and certain processed foods, where it provides a mild vinegar-like flavour note and contributes antimicrobial preservative action.

๐Ÿงช

Buffer Solutions

Widely used in combination with acetic acid to create acetate buffer systems for laboratory, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications requiring stable pH control in the moderately acidic range.

๐Ÿงต

Textile Dyeing & Processing

Used in textile dyeing operations as a buffering agent to control and maintain the pH of dye baths within the optimal range for specific dye classes, helping ensure consistent and predictable dyeing results.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Concrete Admixtures

Used as a set retarder and admixture component in certain concrete and cement formulations, helping control the setting time of concrete in specific construction applications.

๐Ÿ”ฅ

Heat Packs & Thermal Applications

The trihydrate form of Sodium Acetate is used in reusable heat packs, taking advantage of its supercooling and crystallisation properties to release stored heat on demand when triggered.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ

Corrosion Inhibition

Used in certain corrosion inhibitor formulations and de-icing applications, taking advantage of its chemical properties as an alternative to more aggressive de-icing chemicals in specific applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Sodium Acetate work in reusable heat packs?
Sodium Acetate Trihydrate has the unusual property of being able to remain in a liquid (supercooled) state below its normal melting point of around 58°C when carefully cooled. When the supercooled liquid is disturbed (typically by flexing a metal trigger disc), it rapidly crystallises, releasing the latent heat of fusion and providing a controllable, reusable heat source — this is the basis of reusable hand warmer heat packs.
What is the difference between Sodium Acetate Anhydrous and Trihydrate?
Anhydrous Sodium Acetate contains no bound water and has a higher concentration of active acetate per kg, commonly used in applications requiring precise buffer concentrations or where moisture must be minimised. The Trihydrate form contains three water molecules per formula unit and is the form most commonly used in heat pack applications and certain buffer preparations where the hydrate form is specifically required.
Is Sodium Acetate safe to use in food?
Yes — Sodium Acetate is approved as a food additive (E262) by food safety regulatory bodies worldwide including FSSAI, within specified usage limits. It has an extensive history of safe use as a flavouring and preservative agent in various food applications.
Do you export Sodium Acetate outside India?
Yes. We export to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and South Africa with full export documentation. Contact us for export pricing and lead times.
