Calcium Nitrate

Fertiliser Grade · Industrial Grade — Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is Calcium Nitrate?

Calcium Nitrate (Ca(NO3)2) is a highly water-soluble inorganic salt that provides both calcium and nitrate nitrogen, two essential nutrients for plant growth. It is a white to off-white, highly hygroscopic crystalline or granular material that readily dissolves in water, making it one of the most efficient and fast-acting calcium and nitrogen fertilisers available, particularly valued for its use in fertigation and hydroponic systems.

Polychem Industries supplies Calcium Nitrate in fertiliser grade and industrial grade to agricultural input companies, hydroponic system suppliers, and the construction and water treatment industries across India and internationally. Its dual nutrient function and complete water solubility make it a preferred choice for high-value crop production, while its calcium content also finds use in concrete admixture applications.

Applications & Uses

๐ŸŒฑ

Fertigation & Hydroponics

The primary application. Calcium Nitrate is widely used in fertigation (fertilising through irrigation systems) and hydroponic nutrient solutions due to its complete water solubility and provision of both calcium and nitrate nitrogen in immediately plant-available form.

๐Ÿ…

Fruiting Vegetable Crops

Particularly valued in tomato, pepper, and other fruiting vegetable production to prevent calcium-deficiency disorders such as blossom end rot, while simultaneously supplying nitrogen for vegetative growth.

๐ŸŒณ

Fruit Tree & Orchard Nutrition

Used in orchard fertigation programs to supply calcium, which is important for fruit firmness, storage quality, and reducing physiological disorders in apples, pears, and other fruit crops.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Concrete Admixtures

Industrial Grade Calcium Nitrate is used as an accelerating admixture in concrete, speeding up the setting and hardening process, which is particularly valuable in cold weather concrete applications.

๐Ÿ’ง

Water Treatment

Used in certain water and wastewater treatment applications, including odour control in sewage systems where it helps prevent the formation of hydrogen sulphide gas through biological nitrate reduction processes.

๐Ÿญ

Industrial & Chemical Applications

Used as a raw material and oxidising component in various industrial chemical processes, including certain explosive formulations and other specialty chemical manufacturing applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Calcium Nitrate preferred for fertigation and hydroponics?
Calcium Nitrate is preferred because it is completely water-soluble with no risk of precipitation when properly used, and it supplies calcium in a form readily available to plants without introducing chloride or sulphate ions that could interfere with other nutrients or affect soil/substrate chemistry. It also provides nitrogen in the nitrate form, which is immediately available for plant uptake.
Why does Calcium Nitrate need to be kept separate from phosphate and sulphate fertilisers?
Calcium Nitrate should not be mixed directly with phosphate or sulphate-containing fertilisers in concentrated stock solutions, as this can cause the formation of insoluble calcium phosphate or calcium sulphate precipitates, which can clog irrigation and fertigation equipment. In practice, growers typically use separate stock tanks (often labeled "Tank A" for calcium nitrate and "Tank B" for phosphates/sulphates) that are only combined upon final dilution in the irrigation line.
How is Calcium Nitrate used in concrete?
Calcium Nitrate is used as a set accelerator in concrete admixtures, helping speed up the hydration and hardening process of cement. This is particularly valuable in cold weather concreting, where normal setting times would otherwise be significantly delayed, and also helps provide some corrosion inhibition benefits for reinforcing steel.
