What is Polysorbate 20?

Polysorbate 20, commercially known as Tween 20, is a non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier produced by the ethoxylation of sorbitan monolaurate. It is a pale yellow to amber, oily liquid with excellent emulsifying, solubilising, and dispersing properties. With a high HLB value of 16.7, it is strongly hydrophilic, making it particularly effective for oil-in-water emulsions and for solubilising small amounts of oils, flavours, and fragrances into aqueous systems.

Polychem Industries supplies Polysorbate 20 in cosmetic and food grades to personal care formulators, food and beverage manufacturers, and pharmaceutical companies across India and internationally. Its mildness, FDA/FSSAI approval status, and versatility make it one of the most widely used emulsifiers across multiple regulated industries.

Applications & Uses

๐Ÿ’†

Cosmetics & Personal Care

Widely used as an emulsifier and solubiliser in lotions, creams, serums, and cleansing products. Its mildness makes it suitable for sensitive skin formulations, and it is frequently used to solubilise essential oils and fragrances into water-based products.

๐Ÿน

Food & Beverage Emulsification

Approved as a food additive (E432) used to emulsify oils into water-based food products including flavour emulsions, ice cream, whipped toppings, and beverage formulations, providing stable, uniform dispersion of oil-based ingredients.

๐Ÿ’Š

Pharmaceutical Formulations

Used as a solubiliser and emulsifier in oral and topical pharmaceutical formulations, helping disperse poorly water-soluble active ingredients and improve bioavailability in certain drug delivery systems.

๐ŸŒธ

Fragrance & Essential Oil Solubilisation

Used to solubilise essential oils and fragrance oils into water-based products such as room sprays, linen sprays, and aromatherapy mists, allowing clear, stable aqueous solutions without visible oil separation.

๐Ÿงช

Laboratory & Diagnostic Applications

Used as a wetting agent and blocking reagent in laboratory and diagnostic test formulations, including in biological assays such as ELISA, due to its mild, non-denaturing properties with proteins.

๐Ÿงด

Hair Care Products

Used in conditioners, hair serums, and styling products to emulsify silicones and oils into water-based formulations, improving product spreadability and uniform application.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Polysorbate 20 and Polysorbate 80?
Polysorbate 20 is derived from lauric acid (a shorter-chain fatty acid from coconut/palm sources) and has an HLB value of 16.7. Polysorbate 80 is derived from oleic acid (a longer-chain fatty acid) and has a slightly lower HLB of 15. Polysorbate 20 is generally preferred for solubilising essential oils and fragrances and for lighter emulsions, while Polysorbate 80 is more commonly used for heavier oil emulsification and has broader use in food and pharmaceutical emulsions.
Is Polysorbate 20 safe for use in food and cosmetics?
Yes — Polysorbate 20 is approved for use in food (E432) by food safety authorities including FSSAI, and is widely used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals with an extensive safety record. It is considered safe at typical use levels in approved applications.
Can Polysorbate 20 be used to make essential oils water-soluble?
Yes — this is one of its most common uses. Polysorbate 20 is highly effective at solubilising small percentages of essential oils and fragrance oils into water, creating a clear or slightly hazy aqueous solution rather than an oil layer separating on top. The typical ratio is approximately 1:1 to 4:1 (Polysorbate to oil) depending on the desired clarity and the specific oil being solubilised.
Do you export Polysorbate 20 outside India?
Yes. We export to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and South Africa with full export documentation. Contact us for export pricing and lead times.
