Propylene Glycol

USP Grade · Technical Grade — Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is Propylene Glycol?

Propylene Glycol (PG), chemically known as 1,2-Propanediol, is a synthetic, colourless, odourless, viscous liquid with the formula C₃H₈O₂. It is a diol (two hydroxyl groups) with excellent hygroscopic, solvent, and humectant properties. Propylene Glycol is classified as GRAS (Generally Recognised as Safe) by the FDA and is one of the most widely used chemicals across the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and industrial sectors.

Polychem Industries supplies Propylene Glycol in USP/Food Grade and Technical Grade to pharmaceutical manufacturers, food processors, cosmetic formulators, and industrial chemical companies across India and internationally. Its excellent safety profile, wide liquid range, and versatility as a solvent and humectant make it indispensable across multiple industries.

Applications & Uses

💊

Pharmaceuticals

Widely used as a solvent and co-solvent for oral, topical, and injectable pharmaceutical formulations. Also used as a humectant in tablet coatings, ointments, and suppositories. USP Grade required.

🍞

Food & Beverage

Approved as a food additive (E1520) and used as a humectant, solvent for food colours and flavours, and moisture-retention agent in baked goods, dairy products, and confectionery.

💆

Cosmetics & Personal Care

A key humectant and solvent in skin care, hair care, and personal care formulations. Used in moisturisers, shampoos, deodorants, and oral care products for its skin-conditioning properties.

❄️

Antifreeze & Heat Transfer

Technical Grade PG is used in aircraft de-icing fluids, food-grade antifreeze for refrigeration systems, and as a heat transfer fluid in HVAC and industrial cooling applications.

🎨

Paints, Resins & Coatings

Used as a reactive diluent and building block in the production of polyester resins and alkyd resins for paints and coatings. Also used as a solvent in water-based paint formulations.

🏭

Industrial & Chemical Processing

Used as a solvent, humectant, and chemical intermediate in industrial processes including plastics production, rubber processing, and specialty chemical manufacturing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Propylene Glycol USP Grade and Technical Grade?
USP/Food Grade Propylene Glycol meets the strict purity specifications of the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), British Pharmacopoeia (BP), and Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP). It has low limits on impurities including heavy metals, aldehydes, and residual solvents, making it suitable for pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic use. Technical Grade meets general industrial specifications and is used for antifreeze, resins, coatings, and other non-food applications.
Is Propylene Glycol safe for food use?
Yes — USP/Food Grade Propylene Glycol is approved by the FDA as GRAS (Generally Recognised as Safe) for use in food. It is listed as food additive E1520 and is approved by FSSAI for use in food products in India. It has been used safely in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications for decades.
What is the difference between Propylene Glycol and Di Propylene Glycol?
Propylene Glycol (PG) is the primary diol with molecular weight 76 g/mol. Di Propylene Glycol (DPG) is a mixture of three isomeric chemical compounds formed as a by-product of PG production, with higher molecular weight (~134 g/mol), higher boiling point, and lower vapour pressure. DPG has specific applications in fragrances, personal care, and industrial uses where its lower volatility is advantageous.
Do you export Propylene Glycol outside India?
Yes. We export to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and South Africa with full export documentation. Contact us for export pricing and lead times.
