Super Absorbent Polymer

SAP · Hygiene & Agricultural Grade — Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is Super Absorbent Polymer?

Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) is a lightly cross-linked polyacrylate polymer with the extraordinary ability to absorb and retain water-based liquids at many times its own dry weight — typically 300 to 500 times. It is produced from Acrylic Acid that has been polymerised and lightly cross-linked, then neutralised with sodium or potassium hydroxide. The resulting polymer absorbs liquid through osmotic pressure and forms a stable hydrogel that retains the absorbed liquid even under moderate pressure.

Polychem Industries supplies Super Absorbent Polymer to hygiene product manufacturers, agricultural companies, and industrial absorbent producers across India and internationally. SAP is the core technology behind modern hygiene products, having revolutionised the diaper and sanitary products industry by replacing bulky cellulose fluff with thin, highly absorbent polymer cores.

Applications & Uses

๐Ÿ‘ถ

Baby Diapers

The single largest global application. SAP forms the absorbent core of disposable baby diapers, allowing for thin, lightweight products with exceptional liquid absorption and retention, keeping skin dry and reducing leakage.

๐Ÿงด

Adult Incontinence Products

Used in adult diapers, incontinence pads, and underpads where high absorption capacity, retention under pressure, and odour control are critical performance requirements for user comfort and dignity.

๐Ÿฉธ

Feminine Hygiene Products

Used in sanitary napkins and pads as the core absorbent material, providing thin, comfortable products with high absorption capacity and excellent fluid retention under body pressure.

๐ŸŒฑ

Agricultural & Horticultural Use

Used as a soil conditioner and water-retention additive in agriculture, horticulture, and landscaping. SAP absorbs and stores water in soil, releasing it gradually to plant roots, reducing irrigation frequency and improving drought resistance.

๐Ÿญ

Industrial & Cable Applications

Used in cable wrap applications to prevent water ingress along fibre optic and electrical cables, and in industrial spill control and absorbent pads for managing aqueous liquid spills.

๐Ÿ“ฆ

Packaging & Food Transport

Used in absorbent pads for food packaging (meat, fish, poultry trays) to absorb purge liquid and extend shelf appearance, and in cold-chain packaging for moisture control.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Super Absorbent Polymer absorb so much liquid?
SAP works through a combination of osmotic pressure and the chemistry of its cross-linked polymer network. The carboxylate groups on the polymer chain ionise in water, creating a strong osmotic gradient that draws water molecules into the polymer structure. The cross-linking prevents the polymer from dissolving, instead allowing it to swell into a stable hydrogel that can hold many times its own weight in liquid, even under moderate pressure such as body weight in a diaper.
What is the difference between Sodium Polyacrylate SAP and other absorbents?
Traditional absorbents like cellulose fluff pulp absorb liquid through capillary action and can release it under pressure (re-wet). SAP absorbs liquid chemically through its polymer structure and retains it firmly even under pressure, providing far superior dryness performance at a fraction of the bulk. This is why modern thin diapers achieve better performance than older bulky designs.
Can SAP be used to improve soil water retention in agriculture?
Yes — Agricultural Grade SAP is increasingly used as a soil amendment to improve water retention, particularly in sandy soils or drought-prone regions. When mixed into soil, SAP absorbs irrigation or rainwater and releases it gradually to plant roots over time, reducing watering frequency and improving plant survival during dry periods.
