Tri Ethylene Glycol

Industrial Grade — Bulk supply across India & International Markets

What is Tri Ethylene Glycol?

Tri Ethylene Glycol (TEG) is a colourless, practically odourless, hygroscopic liquid composed of three ethylene glycol units joined by ether linkages, giving the formula HOCH2CH2OCH2CH2OCH2CH2OH. It has the highest molecular weight and boiling point of the common ethylene glycol family (MEG, DEG, TEG), along with very low volatility, making it the preferred glycol for natural gas dehydration applications worldwide.

Polychem Industries supplies Tri Ethylene Glycol to natural gas processing companies, plasticiser manufacturers, and industrial chemical formulators across India and internationally. TEG's exceptional hygroscopic properties and thermal stability make it the gold standard desiccant for natural gas dehydration in the oil and gas industry.

Applications & Uses

Natural Gas Dehydration

The single most important industrial application of TEG. It is used in glycol dehydration units at natural gas processing plants and offshore platforms to absorb water vapour from raw natural gas, preventing pipeline corrosion, hydrate formation, and ensuring gas meets pipeline specification.

🎨

Plasticisers

Used as a raw material in the production of plasticisers for various polymer applications, providing flexibility and workability to plastic and rubber products.

🧴

Humectants & Personal Care

Used as a humectant in certain industrial and personal care formulations where its low volatility and moisture-retention properties are advantageous compared to lower molecular weight glycols.

💨

Air Sanitisation & Disinfection

TEG vapour has documented air-sanitising properties and has historically been used in air disinfection systems in hospitals, schools, and public spaces to reduce airborne bacteria and viruses.

🧪

Industrial Solvent

Used as a high-boiling solvent in various industrial chemical processes where a stable, low-volatility solvent medium is required for reactions or formulations.

🏭

Specialty Chemical Manufacturing

Used as a chemical intermediate and processing aid in the manufacture of various specialty chemicals, polymers, and industrial formulations requiring its specific molecular properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is TEG preferred over MEG and DEG for natural gas dehydration?
Tri Ethylene Glycol is preferred for natural gas dehydration because it has the lowest vapour pressure and highest thermal stability among the common glycols, meaning less glycol is lost to vapourisation during the regeneration process. It also achieves a lower dew point depression, allowing gas to be dried to meet strict pipeline water content specifications more effectively than MEG or DEG.
How does the natural gas dehydration process using TEG work?
In a typical TEG dehydration unit, wet natural gas is contacted with lean (dry) TEG in a contactor tower, where the TEG absorbs water vapour from the gas. The now "rich" (wet) TEG is then sent to a regeneration unit where it is heated to drive off the absorbed water, regenerating "lean" TEG for reuse in a continuous cycle.
Is Tri Ethylene Glycol the same as the air sanitiser used in some buildings?
Yes — Triethylene Glycol vapour has documented bactericidal and antiviral properties when vapourised into air at controlled low concentrations, historically used in air sanitisation systems. This is a specialised application distinct from its primary industrial use in gas dehydration, and should only be implemented through properly engineered systems.
